How to Train Your Dragon (2025)

I Just Watched How to Train Your Dragon (2025) and I’m Fully in Love Again

Okay, so… where do I even start? I just got back from seeing How to Train Your Dragon (2025) and I swear my heart is still somewhere up in the clouds with Toothless and his adorable babies. I’m not even gonna pretend to be cool about this. I’m obsessed. Always have been. Always will be. And this movie just reminded me why.

It Feels Like Coming Home

If you grew up watching Hiccup and Toothless become best friends and basically save the world together, this movie is going to hit you right in the feels. It’s set a few years after The Hidden World, and Hiccup’s older now, trying to be a good leader and figure out how to protect both people and dragons. There’s a new bad guy (obviously), and it means Hiccup has to reunite with his old crew and meet some new faces.

And omg, the new baby dragons?! I wanted to jump into the screen and hug them all. Seriously, it’s like the animators knew I was going to be watching this and designed them just for me.

The Animation Is Pure Magic

I know people always say this about sequels, but the animation in this one is actually insane. The colors, the lighting, the way the dragons move — it’s just beautiful. There’s this one scene during a lightning storm that literally made me stop breathing for a second. It’s like they painted the sky with fire and mist and sparkles, and I want to live there now.

Every single dragon has so much personality, and the flying scenes feel like you’re actually up there with them. I got goosebumps. Real ones.

The Music Got Me Emotional, Not Gonna Lie

John Powell is back doing the music and bless his heart because it’s perfect. Those epic songs from the old movies are still there, but there are new ones too that made my chest hurt in the best way. Like when Toothless shows up for the first time (not a spoiler, you knew he was coming), the music just gets you. I could feel my eyes starting to water and I didn’t even care.

Characters I Wanted to Hug (and Maybe Marry)

Hiccup’s grown up now, but he’s still the awkward, brave, dorky guy we all fell for. Astrid is even cooler (how??) and the new young characters are actually adorable. I thought I might roll my eyes at them trying to replace the OG crew, but nope — they’re funny and kind of chaotic in a good way.

Also, Toothless is still the cutest animated thing to ever exist. Period.

What It’s Really About

At the end of the day, this movie is about family, bravery, and growing up without losing the parts of yourself that matter most. It’s about loving your weirdness and fighting for the things you believe in. Even though it’s got big fight scenes and flying dragons, it’s also about those tiny moments — like when two people just sit quietly together, or when a dragon nuzzles your hand because it trusts you.

I left the theater feeling like my heart grew three sizes, like the world was just a little bit more magical than before.

Final Thoughts

If you’re like me and you live for fantasy worlds, lovable dragons, and animated movies that make you feel like a kid again, How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is a must-watch. It’s cozy, it’s exciting, it’s beautiful, and it reminds you why stories like this are so special.

I already want to go see it again. And if they make another sequel or a spin-off? I’m there. Front row. Toothless plushie in hand.

Pros

  • The animation is absolutely stunning and made me wish I lived in Berk
  • John Powell’s music had me feeling everything, all at once
  • Toothless and the baby dragons are literal perfection
  • The story still has so much heart and warmth even after all these years

Cons

  • The new villain wasn’t as cool or scary as Drago from the second movie
  • A couple of the side characters didn’t get enough screen time (I wanted more Ruffnut moments, honestly)
  • Some parts of the middle dragged a tiny bit before the big final battle
  • I cried like three times and wasn’t emotionally prepared
